Physically, EtherCAT® is a ring system that uses a summation frame method. The data is manipulated as it passes through the device. It exists in two physical forms: E-Bus and Ethernet. While E-Bus is only suitable for short distances within a device, only the Ethernet variant offers the advantages of an Ethernet system.
